What Exactly Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers, in the simplest terms, are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin in a targeted area. They temporarily add volume and fill in facial lines and wrinkles. There are a multitude of dermal filler formulas, each designed for a specific purpose. Hyaluronic fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are two popular choices for volume and fine lines, and each has its own suite of sub-specialty fillers.
Radiesse, a calcium-based filler, and Sculptra, whose main active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid, are commonly used for moderate to deep wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth.
Fillers typically last anywhere from 6 months to over a year, depending on the type used and the patient’s metabolism. Most patients who use dermal fillers should expect to have routine touch-up visits every 6-8 months or so.
